This comes after Spain failed to submit a ‘valid’ joint bid with Portugal and Morocco by Monday’s deadline. Under FIFA’s rotation policy - that a World Cup cannot be hosted in the same region more than once every 12 years - the 2035 tournament had to be held in Europe or Africa.

At today’s UEFA congress in Belgrade, Infantino stated:

“Today I can confirm as part of the bidding process that we received one bid for 2031 (America) and one valid bid for 2035 (UK)”

HISTORY OF UK HOSTS

It’ll be the first time a World Cup has been held in the UK since England hosted the 1966 men’s tournament, which as we know was famously never completed and so no winners were announced.

In more recent years, England hosted the Women’s Euros in 2022 (won by England) and both England and Scotland hosted matches for the covid-delayed men’s Euro 2020 tournament in 2021. The UK and Ireland will be hosting the next men’s Euros tournament in 2028, with Hampden the only Scottish stadium to be submitted as part of the 2028 bid.

There have been nine FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments, which have been won by five different countries. The United States have won four times, Germany twice while Japan, Norway, and Spain have all won it once.
