Daizen Maeda Named SPFL Premiership Player of the Year
Celtic players have won this award 11 times since 2003 - more than all other clubs combined
Daizen Maeda has been named the Premiership Player of the Year. The award comes two weeks after he was also voted the player of the year by his fellow players.
The Japan forward has netted 33 goals and provided 12 assists in 49 games, which includes 16 league goals and 7 assists. He is currently one goal behind Cyriel Dessers in the race to be the Premiership top scorer. However the most important prize for Maeda will be the one on offer in next week’s Scottish Cup final, as Celtic look to secure another treble.
The SPFL annual prizes have only been awarded since the 2015/16 season, with a two year gap after the SPL/SFL merger in 2013. However analysing every award - including SPL awards since 2003 - shows that Celtic players have now won this award 11 times - more than double the next club.
Below is the list of previous winners, broken down by club for just the FOUR Premiership clubs that have ever provided a top flight player of the year.
The breakdown for the PFA award, which has been around for nearly 50 years and is voted for by the fellow players, then follows as a comparison. Eight clubs have provided a PFA Player of the year and only six of those clubs are still in the Premiership.
