Gaffr Scottish fantasy football: the ultimate boost strategy guide for GW1–12
How to play, what to prioritise and when to strike.
Gaffr's version of Scottish Premiership fantasy football is a different beast from those used to playing the well-known English version of fantasy football, ‘FPL’. Instead of deciding which chips to play across an entire 38 week season, you’re navigating three 12-week sprint seasons, each with unique boost chips you can use in each block.
This article covers:
A breakdown of each GW1–12 boost
How they work (and what’s different from FPL)
Captain and bench rules (you need to know this!)
My full boost strategy with predicted fixtures and timing
What’s next (when GW13–25 chips arrive)
You’ll pick 3 of 6 boosts in GW1–12, and they reset completely in GW13 - so you need to use them wisely and often.
🚀 Boosts explained: GW1–12
Here are the confirmed boosts you can choose from in the first 12-week cycle.
1. Overhaul
Unlimited changes to your squad for one gameweek. Transfers are permanent.
This is your “wildcard” equivalent.
Unlike FPL, taking hits in Gaffr (–4 points per extra transfer) isn't as punishing though. That’s because well-timed boosts can swing your score by 30–40+ points, easily offsetting a few deductions. So this chip can be seen as less critical than in FPL as you can also take hits to make several changes (a mini wildcard) and prioritise using a different boost instead of using overhaul. That said, it’s still hugely valuable for:
Fixing a broken squad
Rebuilding after injury/rotation chaos
Setting up a new core for upcoming fixture shifts or boosts
You’ll likely get 3 Overhauls per season (1 per 12-week pool), though not 100% confirmed, so it may more more optimal to play it in the next season block when your team might benefit from it more.
2. Old Firm
All Celtic and Rangers players in your starting XI score double.
No captain, vice, or emergency choices apply
Bench is not impacted
Use when both Old Firm teams have great fixtures, or double, and when stacked with 5-6 of their best players.
3. Away Day
Anyone in your starting XI who’s playing away gets 2x their points.
Captain, vice, and emergency are disabled
Starters only (bench does not benefit)
✅ Ideal when you can line up 9+ players playing away, preferably with strong fixtures, although that can be challenging.
4. Midfield Dynamos
All 5 starting midfielders get x2 points.
Bench mids don’t count
No captain multipliers apply
Effective only if you have five quality mids playing in favourable fixtures. Midfielders are streaky in this game, so timing matters.
5. Triple Triple
Your captain, vice, AND emergency captain all score triple points.
That’s 3 players scoring x3 = massive upside.
All three must be in your starting XI
Works best in a double gameweek where your picks are nailed and explosive but can be beneficial in single gameweeks too
6. Jeepers Keepers
Both of your GKs earn their normal fantasy points plus the following bonuses:
+2 points per half clean sheet
+3 points per save (!)
+10 points per penalty save
Massive upside if you have two shot-stoppers likely to be busy - e.g. facing strong attacking teams. Even better in a DGW.
10 saves = 30 points. This has happened before.
Bench and captain boost recap:
Bench players do NOT benefit from boosts (unless a specific chip in future allows it)
Captain/vice rules are disabled during Old Firm and Away Day chips
Triple Triple (captain/vice/emergency) only works if all three are starting
Jeepers Keepers scores are added separately and not boosted by captaincy

Overall strategy
Have a rough but flexible plan to use all 3 boosts in the first 12 weeks before you set your GW1 team
Use the info we already have about postponements and tailor your squad to reflect that
Target double gameweeks and fixtures where most of your XI can benefit
Use unlimited transfers ONLY if squad issues or to prep for DGW/fixture swings
Let’s jump into when I am planning to use the boosts and what weeks we need to keep our eyes on more generally…
GW3: blank
A reminder that Dundee United vs Aberdeen already postponed, avoid their players in GW1
Save 2 transfers for this week, you’ll likely need them
Potential blank for Rangers and possibly Celtic due to Champions League qualifiers
I’m starting with 3 Celtic + 2 Rangers for GW1 and 2, planning to bench 3 of those 5 players if they both blank
Will not start with any Livi or St Mirren players (their opponents in GW3) just in case they blank
If Rangers and Celtic both blank:
→ Use your 2 FTs to remove 2 Celtic/Rangers and bench the other 3
→ Still field 11 without hits or Overhaul ideally
Only sell Old Firm players if they blank. If they have a game, they should start. And if you do sell them - make sure you have a plan to bring them back.
GW5: likely double gameweek
Expect doubles for Aberdeen and Dundee Utd
Possibly Celtic/Rangers too
Best boost options:
Jeepers Keepers: Dundee Utd face Aberdeen & Hibs = shot fest
Add a second keeper like St Mirren's vs Falkirk & Rangers if Rangers game gets called off and they double in this gameweek
Old Firm (if both double) could work well
Overhaul also viable this week if you:
Need to rebuild after GW3 blank
Want triple Aberdeen (they likely double and have great fixtures after)
Want to offload Hibs assets (fixtures turn really bad)
GW8: away days
I’m locked in on this I think.
Celtic @ Dundee
Hearts @ Killie
Aberdeen @ St Mirren
Falkirk @ Motherwell (Arfield + Graham for bench boostable enablers)
➡️ 10-11 away players possible with good fixtures
➡️ Big upside if even 6–7 return
GW12: Triple-Triple
This is a standout week for Triple Captain/Vice/Emergency:
Celtic vs Killie (Maeda, Hatate, any defender)
Rangers vs Dundee (Gassama, Tavernier, Raskin)
Hearts vs Dundee Utd (Shankland?)
➡️ 3 high-ceiling captain picks, late in the cycle when we have plenty data
➡️ Very likely to deliver huge returns
What’s next?
New pool of boosts drops after GW12
I’ll publish a full strategy guide for GW13–25 when they land
