History of Celtic F.C In Penalty Shootouts
A look at Scottish Football penalty shootouts through the years
Celtic progressed to the Scottish Cup Semi Finals by beating Rangers 4-2 in a penalty shootout - the first ever shootout between the two at Ibrox. This was the third official penalty shootout between the two teams, with Celtic now having won the most recent two. Celtic have also now won exactly ten penalty shootouts in major competition in their history.
For Rangers, they’ve now lost four of their past five penalty shootouts (Celtic, Celtic, Eintracht Frankfurt & St. Johnstone) without saving a single penalty in any of the losing shootouts. As a result, Jack Butland is now 0/9 in penalty shootouts against Celtic - although he’s saved from Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley in his run of saving 8 from 9 excluding shootouts. Rangers’ sole victory in their last five penalty shootouts came in last season’s Europa League last 16 match at Ibrox, where Butland saved two of four kicks, with a third Fenerbahçe kick sailing over the bar.

Penalty shootouts were formally introduced at IFAB's annual general meeting on 27th June 1970, as it was agreed that the drawing of lots or coin tosses were not a fair way to decide who should progress in the event of a tie. Celtic were one of the last beneficiaries of this coin toss method; progressing against Benfica in the second round of the 1969/70 European Cup, after the tie ended 3-3.
