Scott McTominay breaks record for most Serie A goals in a season by a Scotsman
He breaks the record of the late Denis Law - which has stood for 63 years
In tonight’s match in Naples between Scudetto chasing Napoli and 10th place Torino, Scott McTominay has scored two first half goals, his 10th & 11th in his debut Serie A campaign.
In doing so he becomes the new record holder for most goals scored in a single Serie A season by a Scotsman. One of Scotland’s greatest ever players, Denis Law - who died in January of this year aged 84 - had been the record holder since 1962.
Law joined Torino from Manchester City in 1961 for a British record fee of £110,000 - which would mean he’d go for at least £100 million in today’s market. He’d stay in Italy for one turbulent season, where he scored 10 Serie A goals in 27 games but was also unsettled throughout. He was involved in a car accident with countryman Joe Baker (who had signed from Hibs) and for a variety of reasons did not enjoy his football in Italy so put in a transfer request. From there he’d move back to Manchester, only this time to the red half, for a fee of £115,000 - and the rest is history.
LIST OF SCOTTISH GOALSCORERS IN SERIE A
Although McTominay now holds the record for the most goals in a single season, he is still not the overall top Scottish scorer in Serie A.
