SPFL weekend Stats 01/03/2025
Celtic 3 wins from the title, Rangers lose 3 home games in a row and Hibs move up to 3rd
RANGERS LOSE 3 HOME GAMES IN A ROW
Barry Ferguson becomes the first Rangers manager to lose his first home match since Tommy McLean 42 years ago. After John Greig had resigned in October 1983, McLean stepped in as caretaker manager and oversaw a 2-1 home loss to Celtic - with Tommy Burns scoring what turned out to be the winner. Rangers finished 4th as Aberdeen won the title under Sir Alex Ferguson. It was the 5th season in a run of 7 where Rangers finished outside the top 2.
Rangers have now lost three consecutive matches at Ibrox for the first time since 2012. Back then their run of three home losses started with a 0-2 loss to Dundee United in the Scottish Cup, before losing 0-1 to Kilmarnock and 1-2 to Hearts in the league. They ended the run by beating Celtic 3-2, a victory which prevented the Celts winning the title at Ibrox.
The scorelines in this run have resulted in the same combined scoreline of 1-5; a 0-1 loss in the Cup to Queen’s Park, followed by a 0-2 loss to St. Mirren and Saturday’s 1-2 loss to Motherwell.
CELTIC 3 WINS AWAY FROM THE TITLE
Celtic can now win the title at McDiarmid park on 6th April Vs St.Johnstone - if they win their two home games before that Vs Rangers and Hearts.
Three wins takes them to 84 points, and the most Rangers can achieve - if they lose at Celtic Park - is 83 points. Rangers next league match is at Celtic Park - after the Fenerbahçe double header - and so they cannot drop any more points before the two meet on Sunday 16th March.
If Celtic win the derby and then beat Hearts on Saturday 29th March - Rangers have to get a point away to Dundee later that evening to stop Celtic winning the title without kicking a ball.
