St. Mirren win the Scottish League Cup!
It's just the 5th major trophy in their history!
St. Mirren have won the oldest national League Cup competition in the world, defeating Celtic 3-1 at Barclays Hampden Park. They become just the second winners, after St. Johnstone in 2021, to have started their campaign in the group stage since the 2016 reformat.
A thorough history of the League Cup from earlier in the season can be found on the website here.
This was St. Mirren’s fourth League Cup final, and their second victory, having lost their first two; 2-1 to Aberdeen in 1955/56 and 1-0 to the nine men of Rangers in 2009/10.
However, today was the buddies second consecutive League Cup final win, having defeated Hearts in a 3-2 epic in 2012/13. It is St. Mirren’s fifth major honour, adding to the three Scottish Cups they won in 1926, 1959 and 1987!
Indeed, the victory over Celtic comes nearly 100 years after the Saints last faced the hoops in a Cup final, the 1925/26 Scottish Cup Final which also saw St. Mirren win by a 2 goal margin (2-0).
It was a superb performance, and a well deserved victory, which moves St.Mirren to joint 8th in the all time League Cup list, and joint 7th in the all time major trophy list. For Stephen Robinson, it’s third time lucky against Celtic - having lost his previous two cup finals with Motherwell against Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.
THREE DEFEATS IN A WEEK
For Celtic, it is full on crisis mode as they lost their first League Cup final since the 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock in 2011/12, ending a run of eight consecutive victorious League Cup finals.
They remain the most successful team in Scottish football history with 120 trophies, but they fail to add to their 22 existing League Cup wins. It’s their second consecutive cup final defeat, after May’s penalty shootout loss to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup.
After becoming the first Celtic manager in history to lose his first two games in charge, Wilfried Nancy stretches that unwanted record to his first three matches, as Celtic lose three times in a week - an extremely rare occurrence.
Thank you for being a paid subscriber to my website, it is genuinely appreciated. Gavin

Please stop mentioning the 2010 final. It never happened 🙃
