Season ticket renewal time is one of the most critical periods of the year for a football club, particularly in Scotland. The clubs launch marketing campaigns, aimed at persuading their loyal fanbase to continue parting with their hard earned cash ahead of a new season. A new season which always begins with new hopes and dreams. Hopes and dreams that are normally shattered by 5pm on the first Saturday of the season!

It’s such a crucial period in Scotland because the fans here provide a larger percentage (~40%) of total revenue than any of the top 20 leagues in Europe.

The TV deals signed with Sky, Premier and BBC provide less than 10% of total revenue into Scottish football.

For most Scottish clubs it’s as simple an equation as:

  • fans don’t renew their season ticket = the club can’t renew a players contract

In England, it’s the polar opposite; the fans provide less than 10% of total income, due to the astronomical TV deals.

For Scottish clubs, against a backdrop of rising match day costs, an increase in the living wage and national insurance contributions, the clubs are under immense pressure to deliver more money from ticket sales - while also not pricing fans out of football. Due to inflation, freezing the prices is an effective price decrease and so therefore 20 out of 42 (48%) SPFL clubs implemented either a price decrease or effective price decrease ahead of the new season.

The SPFL price decreases in adult early bird renewal for 2025/26 Season tickets

Budgeting for the year, especially in the transfer market, is highly correlated to the season ticket renewal numbers a club will receive in early summer. For this reason, the majority of clubs offer an “early bird renewal window”. In this window, season ticket holders from the previous season can renew their ticket - at a slightly discounted price - compared to any new fans taking a season ticket for the first time.

For the purposes of this comparison, all season ticket prices are the
cheapest early bird renewal ticket available, anywhere in the stadium.

For example, if a club offers :

  • Early Bird Renewal Adult Standing season ticket = £215

  • Early Bird Renewal Adult Seated season ticket = £230

  • New Adult Standing season ticket = £240

  • New Adult Seated season ticket = £260

The adult price quoted in the below analysis of all four SPFL divisions would therefore be the £215 early bird standing renewal.

Any “restricted view” or disabled season tickets at a reduced price are also excluded, as well as any season tickets that don’t cover all home games (for example Celtic still have season tickets that exclude the two matches Vs Rangers).
