The most exciting title race Scottish football has witnessed this century took a new twist tonight, as Hearts came from behind to defeat Rangers 2-1 at Tynecastle, to move three points clear of Celtic and seven(!) points clear of Rangers.

The result means that for the first time this season, Hearts are the only side with the title ‘in their own hands’; if they win their three remaining matches - or even win two and draw the last - then they will be confirmed as Champions.

For Rangers, the damaging defeat means they are all but out of the title race, and are now fighting to avoid third place.

This article looks at some of the tightest title races in the history of Scottish football before explaining the European entry points for each club, as it stands.

I’ve teamed up with ‘Boot & Ball’ to promote their Scotland national team playing cards.

The cards are superb, with every one featuring a Scotland reference of some description.
