On the Saturday night televised match, Motherwell showed their class as they smashed St. Mirren 5-0 in Paisley. Despite winning the League Cup this season, the Buddies aren’t as strong as they’ve been over the past few seasons - which says more about the standards they’ve set themselves than anything else.

Stephen Robinson has made St. Mirren incredibly hard to beat over the years and they are the only team outside Celtic and Rangers to finish in the top six in each of the past three seasons. This season however, they sit 10th and are likely to get dragged into a fight to avoid the relegation playoff.

Despite that, a team going to the SMISA and winning by five goals is a hugely impressive feat. In fact, over the past 30 years St. Mirren have only lost by 5 goals at home on ONE other occasion, a 0-5 loss at the hands of Celtic in October 2012.

It’s not just rare for it to happen to St. Mirren though, analysing the past 22,500 matches in the top four tiers of Scottish football shows that it’s happened in just 0.6% of matches. This article details:

  • the most recent occasion it has happened for all clubs in Scottish football

  • every occurrence in the top flight since 1992

  • a detailed look at Rangers and Celtic
