Opta Stats Power rankings demonstrating quality of the opposition. Other Scottish teams included for comparison purposes.

RANGERS VS PANATHINAIKOS - UCL QR2

  • Home 1st leg at Ibrox on 22nd or 23rd July

Away 2nd leg in Greece on 29th or 30th July

  • Really bad draw for Rangers - the toughest opponent, and second leg away. Expecting around 3,500 tickets for the away match in Athens.

  • If they win, they progress to UCL QR3 & they are guaranteed at least Europa League phase football. They would be guaranteed at least €12 million from UEFA.
In UCL QR3 they would play one of four teams:

    • 2 teams that enter in this round- Fenerbahçe and Nice

    • 2 winners of Salzburg/Brann and Viktoria Plzen/Servette UCL QR2 ties

  • If they are eliminated - this could be fatal. They drop down as an UNSEEDED team to face the seeded teams in EL QR3 (most expected to progress from EL QR2).
E.g Shakhtar, Braga, Midtjylland, PAOK etc. They would only be guaranteed to earn €1.275m from European football, more on offer if they progress.

  • Lose EL QR3 and they drop to Conference League playoff where total European elimination is a possibility. They'd of course be favourites here as a seeded team. But for example, Utrecht in the Netherlands would be a difficult tie from the 'expected' unseeded teams that will reach the Conference playoff round

If Rangers lose to Panathinaikos and Hibs beat Midtjylland, then Hibs will be on SEEDED side and Rangers on the UNSEEDED side of EL QR3 draw.
They cannot draw each other, and the draw takes place BEFORE the 1st leg of QR2 is even played.

HIBERNIAN VS FC MIDTJYLLAND - EL QR2
